I got to take my mother on a trip to Colombia a couple of years ago. We visited El Museo de Oro in Bogota, where more than 55,000 pieces of incredible, indigenous sculptures and other art pieces made of gold were on display. This painting pays homage to one of the pieces I saw. I thought about how astonishing it is that these pieces not only survived the test of time, but centuries of genocide and oppression. Our ancestor’s beautiful art isn’t the only thing that survived the odds. Our existence is also a testament to our ancestor’s resilience as they continue to live and thrive inside of us.
